WHAT IS LACROSSE?

Lacrosse is a game that was created by the Native American peoples with accounts of the game dating back to as long ago as the 12th century.  Players use a lacrosse stick to carry and pass a ball down a field, trying to score on the opponent's goal.  There are many similarities to other common sports such as hockey and soccer with offensive and defensive players and goalies.  Pads and a helmet are worn by the players as contact does occur during play, however football style hits are strongly discouraged and enforced at the youth level.

GETTING STARTED

A player will need a helmet, cleats, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves and a stick to play lacrosse.  The cost of gear can appear to be intimidating, but there are often affordable used options available on Facebook Marketplace and local used sporting goods stores such as Instant Replay in Pittsfield.  Many stores such as Dick's Sporting Goods and Lacrosse Unlimited offer package deals at a substantially reduced cost.  If your child requires assistance in purchasing equipment the BYCLA does offer financial aid!
